Quick answer: Saw palmetto and nettle root are used for urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Early trials were positive, but larger, longer saw palmetto trials found little benefit over placebo.
Saw palmetto
Early studies were promising; larger trials (including 320 mg a day for a year) found no clear benefit over placebo. NCCIH summarizes the mixed picture (NCCIH).
Nettle root
A randomized trial reported improved urinary symptoms (Safarinejad 2005).
Important
Urinary symptoms need a doctor's check before supplements, to rule out other causes.
